The Lost Sheep (2010 Fall Newsletter)

Matthew 18:12-14
12“What do you think?  If any man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go and search for the one that is straying? 13“If it turns out that he finds it, truly I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine which have not gone astray. 14“So it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones perish.

As I read this parable recently, I began thinking about how I felt like that lost sheep.  It made me think about my life and my walk with the Lord.  And over the years, there have been many pitfalls and distractions that resulted in my going astray.

When I was younger, it was my own stubborness, pride and rebellion that kept me on the path leading away from Him.  I was wanting to be part of the “in crowd”.  Later on it was trying to straighten out my life, beginning by the Spirit and then trying to perfect myself.  And still later on it was not taking the time to listen to the Holy Spirit speaking to me.  I simply did not take time to listen to Him.

No matter how I was led astray, the result was always the same.  I felt alone, empty and never able to fit in.  I felt unworthy, unloved and always a failure no matter what I tried.

I still remember to this day the sense of being alone even in the midst of a crowd.  Outwardly, no one could tell the pain I was feeling.  Oh, I entered into all that was happening around me but inwardly my heart was heavy and miserable, lonely.  Isn’t it amazing how alone and empty you can feel even in the midst of a crowd, at church, at family reunions, school or in any group.

Later on in my life, I started down the path of trying to fix myself up.  You know what I mean.  I tried doing it in my own strength and power.  The problem was that my strength and power was very limited.  The more I tried the more I failed.  The load became too heavy and the feeling of failure and guilt gets reinforced all the more.

And still later in my Christian walk, not taking the time to listen became the problem.  Not having an attentive ear to the Holy Spirit, whenever He speaks, caused me to stray off the path that leads to life.  I get busy with work, family, and my stuff.  No matter what it is or what I do, if I allow it to turn my ear away from Him and distract me, the same feeling of being alone and empty, unworthy, unloved and a failure enters in yet again.

The truth is that we all have been led astray, distracted and deceived in our lives at one time or another.  And our good shepherd, Jesus, leaves the ninety-nine and searches for us.  Yes, me!  He knows that we are scared, lonely and lost with no way of finding our way back.  He comes with arms out stretched and calls our name.  We faintly hear Him off in the distance and we turn and run back to him with arms raised high.  He sweeps us off our feet and holds us tight.

I tell Him, I am lonely and He says, I am here and I will never leave you.  I tell Him that I am afraid and He tells me I am your strength and shield.  I tell Him, I feel empty and He says my cup overflows and there is plenty for you.  I tell Him, I am unworthy and He tells me I died for you and you are worth it.  I tell Him, I am unlovable and He tells me I would do it all over again for you.  I tell Him, I am a failure and He tells me without Him it is impossible to find the path that leads to life, to move mountains and to walk with the Father.

Our Good Shepherd is looking for you and me and will not stop until He finds us.  And when He does there will be a celebration befitting a child of the King.

We are safe!  We are loved!  We are valuable!  We belong!  We are HIS!  And we are at home!

Act Or React! (2010 Fall Newsletter)

By Ralph Nault

We live in a time when some people are trained to cause other people to react.  Business people use this method so that we will buy their product and not buy the competitor’s product.

All of us have learned to use reacton from a very early age.  We didn’t know that we were using that tool to get our way with our parents but we were.  Watch some of the TV shows and see the violence that it brings forth in people.

Reaction often brings forth violence.  I am sure that all of you have experienced this in your own life at some time.  You reacted to something and then said or did something that was violent.

A politician will prepare a message ahead of time that will stir you up and make you angry to serve their purpose.  They want you to react against somebody or something.  If you do, then they have accomplished their purpose.

The Christian church is under attack!  Is this something new?  Or has it been under attack from its beginning?  The Christian church has been under attack from its beginning, and it is still growing.  Don’t react but be an active Christian.

Being an active Christian is more then joining a church, giving some money to that church, and saying my prayers every night and morning. There is nothing wrong with that and this should be a part of our Christian experience.

Being an active Christian means we should be affecting the world around us.  We should be bringing forth a message of good news.  We should be bringing comfort, healing and deliverance to a troubled world.

We live in a very troubled time.  Our nation and all the things we believe in are under attack.  One of our early presidents made the statement that if we were ever defeated it would be from within.  That is happening now!  We are being defeated by the very people we voted into office.  Many of our freedoms have been taken away.  Our nation is no longer the same as it was in the 1900s. Our leaders are not accountable anymore to the people they represent.

Many people have lost their trust in the Government, in our banking system, and in our church institutions.  We don’t really know who we can trust anymore.

God is involved in all of this.  He does not want us to put our trust in government, banks or institutions.  He wants us to put our trust in Him!  For too long we have put our trust in governments, banks and institutions and it is now time to put our trust in God, in the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.

It is easy to get angry and violent and react.   Is this what we should do?

No!  What should we do?

Repent!  Stop looking to the world as our provider and look to Him who will meet all of our needs.  Come out of our church building and bring His power into the world.  Fulfill the great commission.  It is easy to use our church as a hiding place.

Ask God to forgive us for not trusting Him.  Pray and go out into the world with God’s power and message of good news.

We have turned away from God and He has turned away from us.  Pagans are taking over our land and Government and God is allowing it to happen.  God has not given us wise counselors, in our government, in our schools or our churches.  He has allowed deceiving spirits to take their place and deceive our leaders.Act!  Don’t react!  Place your trust in God and pray that He will restore and bless our land once again.

The Importance of Good Thinking

2 Peter 1:4-8

For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.

Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, ?perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness,

and in your godliness, ?brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. for if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor ?unfruitful in the true ?knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

One of the very important, if not the most important thing for self-control is your thinking. What you think about has an affect on what comes out of your mouth. Your thinking also affects your actions and your emotions. The longer your mind dwells on bad thoughts, the more likely you are to say and do the wrong things. How blessed is the man that has learned to know the difference between good thinking and bad thinking.

One of the comments you hear quite often; “I spoke without thinking!” Do you speak without thinking? Our speech and our emotions are forces to be reckoned with.  It is not wise to allow either one of them any freedom without doing some serious thinking.

The damage to our relationships is quite extensive because we don’t consider what these words and actions are doing to the people around us.  And, how long it takes to redeem what our words and emotional outbreaks have done. I realize now that some of these things can never be redeemed.

If you are truly interested in spiritual growth you must begin to practice restraint and self-control.  You will never come to spiritual maturity without it. I would encourage you to pray and ask the Holy Spirit to nudge you every time that you’re thinking and emotions are out of control.

Spiritual Growth #18

Another important aspect of spiritual growth is communication between us and the kingdom of God. The Bible makes it very clear how God speaks to us in this day and age and we need to be open to every one of these means of communication.

In acts Ch 2:17:  “And it shall be in the last days”, God says, “That I will pour forth of My Spirit upon all mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy. And your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.”

This speaks of three ways that God speaks to men.  The first of these was prophesy. Prophesy is when God speaks through people.  What people?  It could be a pastor, priest or minister; it could be a member of your family or a total stranger. If your spiritual man is listening, he will hear it and know where it is coming from.

The second is visions.  I think they are quite common but spiritually we are blind so we don’t see them or recognize them for what they are. Often we just think that was my imagination.

Thirdly are dreams.  We all dream even if we are not aware or do not remember it. I have had many wonderful dreams from God; some of them warned me of things to watch out for, others brought me healing, still others set me free from things that bound me.

God speaks to us through His son Jesus.

Hebrews Ch 1:1-2:  God after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.

God speaks through the Bible.  This is God’s book to the world, where He has hidden many treasures if anyone wants to search for them; many of the things that Jesus spoke in the past are recorded there.

God speaks to us through Christ in us, the hope of glory; the living word that is written in our hearts and minds.  We have no excuse for not hearing God.

As spiritual people we should be learning to hear from God in all these ways.  One very important thought I want to leave with you.  We can have the dream, the vision, the bible, the prophetic word and Christ in us and not be able to interpret the message properly.  tThe natural mind cannot understand the things of God and thinks them foolish.

Thank God when we function as spiritual men and women we can understand and interpret all these things properly.
