A Good Investment
April 2004

by Ralph Nault

I was just sitting here wondering what to write about when I got a call from up in Maine. The call was from my grandchildren, Rachel, Isacc and Josha. They were telling me how many A’s they had on there report cards. I had made a deal with all my grandchildren that I would give them a dollar bill for every A they got for each marking period. We are in Florida until the first of May so they had to call me and let me know how they did. I am very proud of them and how well they are doing. Pauline and I also give them each a US saving bond for their birthday. We love them and want to encourage them in whatever ways we can. We both feel it is a very good investment.

We don’t expect we will see any financial gain for ourselves from this investment, but we still think it is a good investment.

We don’t always have to get a personal return for something to be a good investment. I have several organizations I invest in and I don’t expect I will ever get any return, but they are a good investment and they will pay dividends that someone else will enjoy.

Still you never know. Several years ago we were in Ct. at a meeting and a couple came in very distraught they had been put out of their apartment because the man had lost his job and was unable to pay the rent, they had two small children. At the end of the meeting the Holy Spirit spoke to me so clearly and told me to give them five hundred dollars. I never saw these folks before and have not seen them since, but they thanked me very much. Five or more years went by and I had forgotten all about the incident and I happened to be in a financial bind and I got a letter in the mail from one of the southern states and it was a check for five hundred dollars with a thank you note telling me they had found a good job and had a good place to live. It was a good investment. It came just at the right time to bless me in return.

We all have opportunities to make good investments every day. Sometimes it is money, other times it is an action, we may have to go out of our way quite a lot to make a good investment. It may be just a telephone call or a letter or e-mail but it is a good investment. The investment may be made to a complete stranger, again it may be a member of your family or someone you work with and may not like to well.

It is possible that some of your investments may not pay off at all. Some folks might even think you are a fool to invest in certain people or things. In spite of this I think it is very important that we invest on a regular basis and take opportunity of every situation around you to do so. Maybe some think you only invest in the most sure things, maybe like in yourself but I am not so sure about that.

I just was reminded of the end of the song “falling leaves’ some of the verse goes like this.

Lord let my eyes see every need of every man
Make me stop and always lend a helping hand
This kind of reminds me of the Good Samaritan. I think he made a good investment. The next verse continues
To your grave there’s no use taking any gold
You cannot use it when it time for hands to fold
When you leave this earth for a better home some day
The only thing you take is what you gave away
Maybe our most important investments are not worldly but extend in to the heavenly
