The Fruit of the Spirit
April 2003

by Ralph Nault

You will know them by their fruit.

You will know them by their gifts.

Which of the statements above are true? The first? The second? Or both?

I expect most of you would all agree that the first statement is the truth.

But yet so often it is the gifts that attract us. The miracle and healing gift are wonderful. The power and authority gifts are very appealing. We are attracted to the people using these gifts and desire them for ourselves. The bible tells us to desire the gifts and to use them. There is nothing wrong with that. The church and the world need them.

If we are not careful we can be taken in or misled by gifted people. The Galatians are an example of that. Who has bewitched you? It seems like it must have been someone gifted with leadership abilities.

If a person has miracles and healing gifts does that mean I have to believe everything they tell me. Am I still to test everything? If a person is a pastor, priest or teacher am I still to test everything before I accept it or am I to be a blind person and just except everything that comes my way? I think some blind people see more clearly then the sighted.

Every one of us as Christian people should have read the bible at lest once and hopefully more then once. It gives us a measure to weigh and test by. Do we reject someone because they are in error somewhere? No! We reject the error.

We all make mistakes. I have made my share and now and again someone will tell me so. That's ok! I need correction. I just hope it's done in love not in condemnation and anger. I know that every one of you needs a little correction too. I hope that is done in love

Also.

The gifts of the Spirit are wonderful I pray the church would be filled with them.

The fruit of the Spirit is greater then the gifts. I have a feeling that the gifts of the Spirit are so important to us because of the lack of the fruit of the Spirit in us. I have come to believe that the fruit of the Spirit is greater then the gifts of the Spirit and that there is as much if not more power in the Fruit of the Spirit as there is in the gifts of the Spirit.

We find the comparison of the gifts and the fruit in 1Corinthians 13. The more the fruit of the Spirit is perfected in us the more the power of God will flow through us to other people even if we don't have the gifts. Healing, miracles and deliverances will become a part of our everyday life. When Love is perfected in us, we don't need the gifts because Love is greater then all and contains all the power of God.
