The Perfect Law
Dec. 2002

by Ralph Nault

But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man shall be blessed in what he does.

What is the perfect law of liberty?

It must be the greatest commandment: 'Love one another'. If this is the perfect law then what does it have to do with liberty?

It is interesting that the word liberal used to mean 'freeman'. Now it means you can do anything you want, no restrictions.

If we truly want liberty or freedom can we do anything we want? No!

The perfect law requires something from us: love one another. What does love require from us?

Love is patient, love is kind, and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly, does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth, bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never fails!

Pauline and I have known and stayed with many different families in the past thirty-seven years. We have seen some that were loving and kind to one another; others were not so loving and kind. I noticed that where people had an esteem and respect for one another, there was also a lack of control and manipulation and a very special freedom and liberty that no one seemed to misuse or abuse.

I remember several years ago I was driving across Canada and the Lord spoke to me and said, "No one deserves freedom and liberty unless they love, esteem and respect one another, otherwise they abuse the freedom."

The scripture say's, "You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free."

Until we know truth and love, none of us deserve to be free, and if we were, we would misuse it. Our prayer needs to be: "Lord cause your law to be perfected in me."

There seems to be a principle at work that goes like this. I want everybody to be in the same bondage that I am in. I want to control everybody in the same way I am being controlled, I want to be free but I don't want you to be free.

I find that this perfect law of liberty gives us the freedom to lay down our lives one for another, to love, esteem, and respect one another, to liberate us from having to control and manipulate other people. It establishes love, order, and peace in our homes and churches.

My prayer for this New Year is that this perfect law of liberty will be established in every heart and in every home around the world. Amen and Amen!
