Life or Death, Light or Darkness
Nov. 1994

by Ralph Nault

Have you noticed that we seem to be constantly faced with decisions. Some are small decisions, some are large decisions. Some are very important, others are not so important.

Many times people have come to us and wanted us to make decisions for them or to pray that God would make their decision for them.

Why do they come to us or someone else and want us to make decisions for them? Why do they want God to make their decisions for them?

Well, I guess they don't want to make the decision themselves.

I remember a person that was going to be moving to another part of the country and they asked me if I was familiar with that city and if I could direct them to a church that would be good for them. I didn't happen to know that city well and could not tell them what church to join.

Then they wanted to know how they could tell if they were in a good church or not. I asked them if they knew the difference between life and death. They said, "Yes."

I said, "Fine, try several churches and when you find one filled with life, go there; the ones that are filled with death and bondage stay away from.

Two weeks ago Sunday, I was watching a Christian church service in our motel room and the minister was talking about life and death and that what God is offering us is life, but the choice, the decision, is ours to make. We choose life or death moment by moment in our everyday life. We choose light or darkness moment by moment in each decision in our daily lives. It is not a one moment decision and from then on everything goes that way. If you take a look at the life of Jesus it was an ongoing decision to serve the Father right up to the choice of the cross. It was interesting that for Jesus to choose life He had to make the choice of going to the cross.

If we want to live, are we going to choose the cross which seems to be certain death?

Are we going to choose the foolish way that God offers us?

There is a wisdom called the wisdom of the world. Why is it called the wisdom of the world? It is called the wisdom of the world because it sounds very wise, it seems very wise in every way.

There is another wisdom called the wisdom of God. The wisdom of God seems like foolishness to man.

One of these wisdoms is filled with life and light, the other is filled with death and darkness. I happen to believe that a lot of the wisdom of the world has very subtly entered into our churches around this world. We must be aware of it and how dangerous it is.

Another label for this "wisdom of the world" is "human wisdom". Down through the years I have heard sermons and teachings about "Humanism" and to beware of it and not get caught up in it or the power of it.

I think that some of this humanism has seeped into the church and that we must beware of it. Some of this humanism is right in us; some of the wisdom of the world is in us. That is what we have to guard against more than that which is out there somewhere.

As long as we keep looking out there somewhere for the enemy, we are in trouble. We must watch out for the enemy within, the wisdom of the world within, the death and darkness within.

In our nation we have the same problem. I don't think we have to worry so much about the enemy over there somewhere. Our greatest enemy of our great country is right inside of it. Itis wisdom of the world, it is darkness that looks like light, it is death made to look like life.

My prayer is that God will give us clear discernments so that we can tell the difference between human wisdom and God's wisdom, between life and death, between light and darkness. First, in our own personal lives, secondly in our churches, and thirdly in our nation.

Lord give us the courage to walk and live in your wisdom, life and light!
